What makes Trujillo different from other coastal cities of Peru, you might think.
Lets say it is not just sunny and has a colorful colonial downtown architecture. This city, north of Lima south of Chiclayo has its very own personality, identity and pride.
If not convinced, just sneak peak during January, and you will witness the great mobilization and display around the national marinera contest, an event where thousands of people, from kids to elders, compete against each other during three days to become champions of the Peruvian national dance, the most graceful dance in the whole country.
But if you are not here in January, it doesn’t matter, you can see marinera all year accompanied by Peruvian paso horse -another emblem of Trujillo, that transcended its locality to become a national symbol. This fusion is simply magic.
Magic as starting the day by the sea watching the traditional reed boats -literally called horses by the locals, entering the sea looking to fish at Huanchaco. Or ending the day seeing the surfers, or why not, riding the longest wave yourself at Chicama.
Then, marvel at ancient archaeological centers like Chan Chan, of the Chimu culture. Or visit Huacas of the Sun and Moon, of the preceding Mochica. Move a little bit to the north and the El Brujo complex and its magnificent museum will give you the sensation of entering into another dimension.
Trujillo has a bit of everything, especially if you want to take a bite of its delicious gastronomy. Make sure to stop at many restaurants as possible while walking the downtown streets. Old colonial houses adorned with precious balconies and churches of finely decorated altars await your visit.
This land has something that makes people want to stay, maybe is the relaxed environment or the warm climate. So if you end up staying for long you might like to give a hand and volunteer at one of the many projects taking place in the city and surrounding areas, from teaching english or music to maybe helping at an orphanage or supporting women in developing skills.
