  • 3 days, 2 nights Starts with your arrival at Cusco airport
  • Group Size: 2 - 15(You can also book the tour for you alone)
  • All year round(for WWF: in September)

This tour has been specifically created for the members of WWF wishing to travel through Peru after their conference in Lima.

This 3-Day tour takes you to the Highlights of Cusco and its surroundings. First, you will participate in a Cusco Walking Tour, designed by the RESPONSible Travel Peru Team. Then, you will head to the Sacred Valley, visiting the picturesque towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and their Inca ruins. From Ollantaytambo, you will take the train to Machu Picchu, enjoying scenic views on the way. After visiting Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world, you will make your way back to Cusco.

Concerning the accommodation during this trip, you have two options: either, you can choose to stay in nice 2 to 3-star equivalent hotels, or you can opt for the Superior option of this trip, in which case your hotels would be 3 to 4-star equivalents. You can make your choice during the booking process by simply booking the respective package. If you want to know the exact hotels, where you would stay, please read the FAQs.

You will share this trip with the other WWF meeting participants (no matter the chosen hotel level); but not with other travelers (unless the group remains very small and it is your desire to share, so that the price goes down).

This tour includes the pick-up at Cusco airport on Day 1 and the drop-off at your hotel or the airport in Cusco on Day 3. You will not have to worry about anything during the three days, as we will organize everything for you.

Read the detailed description of this tour below. You will also find all details on whats included (and what not).

Please note that this tour is great for you if you have a little less time in Cusco, or prefer spending more time in other destinations. Should you wish to stay in the area for a longer while, you could have a look at the 4-Day Tour, with a more relaxed rhythm and including an additional trip to Maras and Moray.

Day by Day

Day 1Arrival to Cusco - Walking Tour

Welcome to Cusco! Upon arrival at the Cusco airport, one of our drivers will pick you up with your name on a sign, and bring you to the hotel. This driver only speaks basic English: we hope this won’t be a problem.

The Niños Hotel (2 stars) is our favorite: a very attractive hotel that supports projects with (street) children, we really recommend it. It also has a cozy restaurant if you prefer not to go out.

After check-in (or just luggage drop-off in case your room isn’t available yet) it’s time to join our own Walking Tour. A beautiful introduction to the city and a nice relaxed walk (downhill only). Our driver and guide will pick you up at the hotel and drive you to our first visit, the archaeological site of Qenqo. From there you will walk to Sacsayhuamán: these are impressive ruins with a great view of the city. The guide will tell you a lot of stories! We continue to the San Blas neighbourhood, where we will visit the lovely Xapiri art museum & café (coffee and snack inclusive). Here you can get a fantastic insight into Peruvian indigenous art and even listen to the sounds of the jungle in their special sound-room. Finally, you will visit the famous Sun Temple. At the end of the tour, the guide will give you tips for lunch.

After lunch (not included) you can visit the Cathedral of Cusco (entrance fee: 25 soles p.p.), a museum (Museo Inka is fun!) or do some shopping to get a nice souvenir or a beautiful alpaca sweater.

Day 2Cusco - Sacred Valley - Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

This private tour starts in the morning and you will visit the highlights of the Sacred Valley. An English-speaking guide and transportation from the hotel are included.

The first stop (after possibly a few photo stops) is the Pisac market, where you can get all kinds of souvenirs like pottery, hats, alpaca textiles, musical instruments, paintings, antiques and jewellery. (If the altitude doesn’t affect you, you can also ascend to the archaeological site of Pisac, where you will observe terraces, aqueducts, water channels and enjoy beautiful views).

Your next stop will be at the Inkariy Museum, where you will have the opportunity to learn all about the pre-Columbian cultures of Peru. The tour will last around one hour, visiting eight rooms (for each of the eight great civilizations that Peru has known, in chronological order, with the Inca as last). You will first get a short explanation of each civilization and key points. Then in a large hall, you will enjoy some iconic scenes with stationary characters (puppets) and sound: a very beautiful, fun and original way to get to know the impressive history of Peru.

Along the way, you will have lunch (included). Afterwards, you will visit the beautiful Inca village of Ollantaytambo and its ruins. After the visit, your guide will drop you off at the train station. From here you will be taking the train (approx. 1,5 hours) to the village below Machu Picchu, called Aguas Calientes.

Here you could do a little walk around town and have (a late) dinner in one of the many restaurants. You will probably want to go to bed early, to be one of the first to go to the Machu Picchu entrance: the gates open at 06:00 am!

Please note: Make sure you only take what you need in a small backpack for these 2 days (a maximum of 6 kilos is allowed on the train). The rest remains at the storage of the hotel in Cusco.

Day 3Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

From Aguas Calientes, you will take the bus to Machu Picchu, early in the morning (you can decide the time in advance with your guide). Often referred to as “The Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu is one of the most famous and spectacular sets of ruins in the world. It is located at 2,430 meters above the Urubamba river. The Incas started building it around AD 1430 as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, strategically located between deep canyons and impressive mountains called Apus (Gods for the Incas), so it was a well hidden and well-protected fortress.

In the morning you will have a tour of Machu Picchu (duration: 2-2,5 hours). The same afternoon, after your visit, you will take the train back to the Sacred Valley and a private taxi back to your hotel in Cusco. If you have one of the two latest flights out, you could also still make it back to Lima. (Let us know when you make the reservation!)

Why is this experience RESPONSible?

At RESPONSible Travel Peru, we are trying to foster cultural exchange and improve the livelihoods of the local population. Your traveling with us will contribute to this great cause.

During this tour, you will experience Cusco and the Sacred Valley in a more RESPONSible way than usual. The city tour in Cusco is different from the conventional ones, in the way that it includes a lot less transport. Instead of contributing to the congestion on the streets caused by these tours, you will be walking around in nature above Cusco and in the city itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the tour itself

Is this a private excursion or will I share the experience with other travelers?

This 3-Day experience is destined exclusively for the members of WWF and all the tours included are private for you and your colleagues. Depending on the amount of reservations, we will also mingle those that chose Standard hotels, with those that chose Superior hotels, and even join the groups of the 3-day and 4-day excursion together. Groups will never be larger than 15 people per guide.

If you prefer a private tour for yourself, you can choose that in the booking form by opting for the 100% private Solo traveller option.

Is this tour physically demanding?

Not really, this tour includes many transfers and no hiking experiences. You should not underestimate the altitude and the weather in and around Cusco though (see the next FAQ).

If you want to be well prepared, please read our article on How to stay safe and healthy when traveling in Peru.

What kind of weather should we expect during this route?

Cusco sits at 3.400m of altitude, which is why the sun gets very strong here. During the day it gets hot and you should protect yourself by wearing a hat, using sunglasses and applying sun cream. As soon as the sun sets, however, the temperatures drop significantly, so come prepared for the cold, as well.

In the Sacred Valley, it gets a little less cold because it sits at a lower altitude. Even though it does not tend to rain during the summer months, it is always good to take a poncho with you, just in case.

What's the accommodation like ?

In the standard version of this tour, we will use our favorite standard accommodations. They are equivalent to a two to three-star accommodation and always have the bathroom ensuite. They all offer good breakfast options.

  • In Cusco:  Niños Hotel or Pensión Alemana (or similar small-scale, cosy hotels with casual service)
  • In Aguas Calientes: Susanna Inn or similar

In the Superior version of this tour, we will use boutique-style hotels where possible, equivalent to three or four-star accommodations. Where possible, we have included the second room level the hotel offers.

  • Cusco: Antigua Casona San Blas (Colonial Room) or Quinta San Blas (Junior Suite)
  • Aguas Calientes: Casa Andina Standard or similar

Of course, hotels and rooms cannot be confirmed until you have booked. We will always try to find an equivalent room and hotel in case our first options aren’t available.

How does the booking and payment process work?

Since we don’t know yet how many of you will be participating, for now we have the booking system open for group booking; meaning you can see what the price is with each amount of participants. You can book the package you desire (standard, Superior or All Private) and after leaving your personal data, you can choose whether you wish to stay in a single room or share (based on double occupancy unless we have an uneven amount of both men and women: in that case there will be one triple and one single room). Please do make sure to push the “Book Now and Pay Later” button at the end to confirm your booking.

Once we know how many of the WWF meeting will be participating in each tour, we’ll apply the group price to each of your bookings and enable the payment gateway for you. This way, you will all pay the best price for your own trip, get your personal invoice, and so on.

For any questions please contact us through the enquiry form above and we’ll get in touch with you.

What happens if we're an uneven amount of participants or men/women?

We have calculated this trip based on double occupancy, meaning that if you don’t opt in for the Single Supplement, you’ll share a twin room with another participant of the same sex. If there’s an uneven number of participants, we have calculated in for one single room. If, however, there is an even number of participants but an uneven number male/female, we’ll put three people of one sex in one triple room, and have a single room for the other “forced single” of the other sex. Of course, we can also ask someone to pay for the single supplement or share that cost. We’re sure we’ll find a solution together.

The RESPONS team

Hi, we are the team of RESPONSible Travel Peru! We specialise in Community-Based and Sustainable Tourism and have been doing so since 2009. At the beginning of our journey, we only worked together with a few communities in Huaraz, up in the North of Peru. Throughout the time, we have grown a great deal and now work together with some 75 communities or more… We have stopped counting, to be honest!

Every day, we give our best to foster our collaboration with local communities throughout Peru, to further cultural exchange, and make sure our visitors have an amazing time in this beautiful country.

Thank you for embarking on your trip through Peru with us!
