Are you ready to explore the Amazon rainforest? This package includes varied activities, such as canoeing during the day and night to discover the mysteries of the jungle and being immersed in the life of an isolated community in the town of San Juan de Yanayacu. Of course, you will also get to explore the surroundings in search of exotic animals you probably have never seen before!

To take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience, you will first have to get to the capital of Peru’s northern jungle. Read here our Travel Guide to Iquitos to find out all about this gateway to nature.

Looking for alternative options? Take a look at a shorter version of this tour Welcome to the Jungle, as well as a longer one: Amazon Full Adventure. They both depart from Iquitos as well.

Children travel with discount to the jungle!

In this tour, children from 1 up to and including 11 years of age (when traveling), only pay half the adult price. Please let us know if there are children below 12 in your group, so that we can adjust the price before you make your payment. (Unfortunately, our booking system doesn’t allow to add children discounts in room-based tours.)

Day by Day

Day 1Iquitos - Lodge - Sapote Lagoon - Night Excursion

We will start this tour by picking you up from your hotel or the airport of Iquitos at around 9.00 am. (Please, make sure you arrive at the airport before that time)  At around 9.30 am, we will leave the city to make our way to your lodge via boat transfer. On our arrival at the lodge, we will have lunch and have some time to settle.

After that, your jungle adventure begins! You will first be able to walk around the lodge for a while to see the immense variety of flora that surrounds you.  We will also try to find some leoncitos, which is the smallest monkey in the world.

For sunset, we will head to the Sapote lagoon to enjoy the amazing views the jungle has to offer at this time of the day. After dinner, you will get the opportunity to go on a night excursion. By boat, we will take you to see caimans, nocturnal birds and mammals.

After this long day, you will have a good night’s sleep at the lodge.

Day 2Amazon River - Piranha Fishing - Community Visit - Night Walk

On our second day, we will head to the Amazon River, where the famous pink and grey dolphins live. You can also swim here if you want! At the river, we can observe the Victoria Regia, the biggest aquatic plant in the world, as well as iguanas.

After lunch, you have the option to go Piranha fishing. We will also visit the village San Juan de Yanayacu with you to meet the community living there.

Having finished dinner, you will again have the opportunity of going on a night walk, this time searching for tarantulas and frogs.

Day 3Lagoon - Medical Plants - Canoe Night Excursion

You will start this day by heading to the Juanachi or Moena Lagoon, looking for different species of birds and monkeys.

After lunch, you will go on an excursion, where we will explain to you the different uses of the local medicinal plants.

At night, a different kind of experience awaits you: You can go on a canoe excursion to listen to the beautiful natural sounds of the jungle. These are so soothing, that you will for sure go to bed all relaxed and satisfied.

Day 4Lagoon - Iquitos

On the last day, you will have an excursion to a lagoon that is difficult to access. You will be identifying and registering animals with the help of your guide.

We will have lunch one last time before taking you back to Iquitos by boat. From here, you will be transferred back to your hotel or to the airport, where you will arrive around 4 pm. (Please, make sure your flight does not go before 5/6 pm, so that things don’t get stressful.)

What makes this experience Impactful?

Our lodge has been constructed with materials from the area, keeping a strict relationship with the environment. Our sewer system goes to a septic tank where our employees perform the necessary sewage treatment to avoid water pollution. Additionally, organic and inorganic waste is separated, using organic waste as fertilizer and compost. The rest of the trash is delivered to Iquitos city, where plastic will go to a recycling center and the rest to a landfill.

Regarding food, we use fresh products from the area, such as fruits, vegetables, and fish. We have a vegetarian and vegan menu. We have our own organic vegetable garden that works when the river level decreases. We also have a flock of free chickens that give us organic eggs, which are free of animal abuse.

Every small action makes a big difference

• For camping and full-day activities, we use reusable dishes and glasses.
• Cleaning campaigns in the ports of Iquitos are done periodically during the year.
• We employ residents of San Juan de Yanayacu and other nearby communities.
• In the lodge, we wash dirty clothes by hand using a biodegradable detergent, giving work to women. (We do not use iron).
• Plastic bags are recycled and put in the garbage dumps of the rooms.
• We do not disturb animals, for this reason, we ask you to be careful while taking photos on our tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

About the Sweet Iquitos Rainforest

When is the best time to visit?

You can visit us throughout the year, the only difference is the level of water in the rivers. Each season has its charm: When it is empty (July-October), we take longer walks; There are white sand beaches in the Amazon and fishing is easier. When it is growing (December-May), the excursions are in canoes, allowing a better observation of animals near the treetops.

Is medical prevention necessary to go to Iquitos jungle?

The lodge is located in an area where there is no Yellow Fever, Dengue, or Malaria. Generally, Malaria and Dengue are contracted near the city, where there is contamination and unhealthy conditions, however, there have been no cases of this disease in years.

Can I travel with children?

We welcome people of all ages and when we know we will have children visit, we customize the excursions to be suitable for them. Among the activities we have, fishing is one of the activities preferred by them. We also have board games to enjoy as we did before technology invades us. In addition, visiting the town of San Juan de Yanayacu will help you learn more about the customs and traditions that may exist and end the day playing in the trees, running in the gardens. If it is school time, guests’ kids can participate in the class activities of the school.

As mentioned above, children from 1 up to and including 11 years of age, will only pay half the adult price. Please let us know if there are children below 12 in your group, so that we can adjust the price before you make your payment.

What happens if the flight is delayed?

Don’t worry because since we received the information of your flight, we have the follow-up, but if there is a reprogramming, we would appreciate it if you would advise us to have the same follow-up. When you arrive in Iquitos, we will be waiting for you to take you to the lodge in an extra boat. But if you arrive after 3:00 p.m., we will help you get a hotel in Iquitos to go to the lodge the next day, since we can not navigate without the sunlight. We only charge the days that you go to the jungle. We know that the delay of a flight is not your fault, and, although we incur expenses, waiting for you is a way to thank you for having chosen to visit the lodge.

What happens in case of a medical emergency?

In case of emergency, we have a first aid kit equipped to treat most cases that may arise. All our guides know first aid, which means they are prepared to face foreseeable emergencies (broken bones or snake bites) but not complex emergencies (such as appendicitis). For snake bites, we have an antidote in the lodge. In case of evacuation, we have a boat available 24 hours a day.

Are vegetarian and vegan options available?

Yes, totally! Don’t worry about it.

Is this a private excursion?

If other people have booked this tour, you might be put together with them in a group. Per 6 people, there will be one guide with you, but you can book a tour with up to 10 people. In that case, you will have 2 guides with you. Please note that we will only put you together with another group of people if we think that you will be a good match (about the same age, fitness etc.).

Percy, Santiago, Analía. The Sanchez Sarfati Family | Responsible Travel Peru

Percy, Santiago and Analía

In 1999, we were a young couple of Peruvians with their heads full of dreams, looking for adventures throughout Peru. We traveled along the beaches, rivers, valleys, and mountains of Peru, but none of that caused the visual impact like the Amazon River and its jungle.

For this reason, we seek a place far away from civilization, and with the help of the community of San Juan de Yanayacu, our dream came true. The beauty of the Amazon Rainforest was so beautiful that we wanted to share all its wonders with the world. At the same time, we were looking to protect this region from illegal logging and hunting. It was at this moment when we decided to create this life project.

Since then, we have demonstrated to the world a sustainable approach to responsible and conscious tourism.

Now, our extended family has more than 40 members, including people from Iquitos, Lima and San Juan de Yanayacu.

All our guides are Peruvian, some speak English and several have been born in the area, growing up with such knowledge that in a given moment can make them a medic or a naturalist, and in other moments they will be so camouflaged with the jungle that you will think that they had a hyper-developed sense of vision and smell.

The community of San Juan de Yanayacu welcomed us with open arms and in a gesture of gratitude, we have created a strategic alliance to preserve the habitat where we are located, benefiting the inhabitants, the animals, the jungle, and our travelers.

We want to contribute and invest in the Peruvian economy. For this reason, we use products that are produced in Peru.

We hope you can help us continue with this beautiful story.
